Online Rummy Glossary

If you’ve recently started playing online rummy, and you are still not entirely sure of all the terminology, then make sure you read this handy Rummy glossary which explains some of the more commonly used terms relating to the game.
- • Deadwood – Unmatched cards after a round or hand is complete.
• Deadwood Count – The value of the cards remaining in the players hand after the hand is complete.
• Deal – Dishing out the cards at the start of the hand.
• Deck – Most Rummy games use the standard 52 card deck.
• Discard – Placing an unwanted card in the hand onto the discard pile.
• Discard Pile – A face-up pile of rejected cards, from which the top card can be drawn by other players.
• Draw – Removing a card from the stock or discard piles.
• Gin – To lay down all cards at once and place the final card in the discard pile, with no deadwood cards.
• Hand – Hands and rounds comprise a rummy game.
• Knock – A player can knock when they have ten points or less in the deadwood count left in their hand when they lay down all cards, grouped into melds and deadwood.
• Lay off – Laying off cards and adding them to an already placed down melded hand reduces the losing opponent’s deadwood count.
• Meld – A sequence of cards, either a set or a run.
• Penalty Points – Points deducted from the players score when a round is lost.
• Run – Three or four consecutive cards of the same suit.
• Set – Three or four cards of the same numerical value or rank.
• Stock – The remaining cards left after cards have been dealt to players, from which cards are taken if not taken from the discard pile.
• Score – Total points gained, or lost, by a player.
• Undercut – To have deadwood count, or less than the knocker.
